Retired Chris Lukezic responds USADA's ban

Retired American miler Chris Lukezic has responded the USADA's decision to ban him for refusal to submit to a drug test on April 20th, 2010. Lukezic had announced his retirement on November 11, 2009.

This is unbelievable. Though I can understand the problem this may create by people "retiring" then beginning back up. I can understand the ban, but think that making it public wasn't appropriate as long as he stayed retired. Had he decided to return to competition, then it may have been appropriate to make it public. I think that there could be a reasonable amount of time after one "retires" that the request for a sample could be made, and after a refusal then a "ban" imposed. This could help prevent any possible circumventing of the issue Lukezic was standing up for.

I do want to point out that I do believe it is a major disruption of his personal life, now that he has retired. I understand the need for unannounced testing, but I think there should be some consideration once an athlete has retired, whereby the USADA attempts to make contact through a phone call or something rather than a knock on the door. Too many "yeah but what if..." to really hash out a plan right now. But both sides have a case in this one, I feel.
