George Herbert Mallory never made it to the top of Mount Everest. In fact, he died trying in 1924. But the ill-fated mountaineer did accomplish something by uttering three immortal words to a New York Times reporter that have been echoing down the valleys of human adventure-seeking ever since.
Asked why he wanted to climb the Himalayan monster, the bright-eyed-soon-to-be-expired-young Brit replied: “Because it’s there.”
Trying to conquer the improbable, or attempting the physically impossible just because the challenge is there, is not a new phenomenon. Human beings are chronic boundary testers, although lately, the idea of doing something just once and then calling it quits — such as, say, climbing Mt. Everest — apparently is not enough.
