National prep championships could happen starting in 2011

The National Federation of State High School Associations could conduct its first national sports championship as early as the summer of 2011.
Ennis Proctor, president of NFHS and executive director of the Mississippi High School Activities Association, said the NFHS board plans to bring a proposal for national championships to the organization's annual meeting in July.
"We are looking at some individual sports," Proctor said. "Probably golf or cross country or tennis. Something that can be played in the summer and not get (students) out of school. Anytime you have a championship, you have to be concerned about missing school and costs, and that's why we would have to have a sponsor. When we started discussing this, we had a good deal of our membership that was in favor of it."
