Student dies during cross country practice - WAOW - Newsline 9, Wausau News, Weather, SportsPublished by
WESTON (PRESS RELEASE)-- On 09-21-09 at about 3:32 p.m. Everest Metro Police officers and Weston Fire Department personnel responded to the D.C. Everest Jr. High School for a report of a "child down, adult doing CPR" on the running track adjacent to the football field. The first EMPD officer arrived on scene at 3:35pm and assisted school staff that were performing CPR on the 14 year-old male student. The officer also attached a defibrillator to the student. Weston Fire EMS arrived on scene at 3:38pm and transported the student to St. Clare's Hospital. Officals at St. Clare's Hospital pronounced the victim deceased at 4:17pm. The victim was a member of the school's cross country team and this event occured within approximately 5-10 minutes after practice started during warm-up exercises. This incident remains under investigation however there is no indication of any foul play at this time. The victim was an 8th grade student at D.C. Everest Jr. High School whose name is being withheld at this time pending notification to family. The D.C. Everest School System will be providing grief counselors to help both students and faculty at the school deal with this tragic event.
