World Championships gold medalist Reese feeds the Gulf Coast
Brittney Reese, a three-time world champion in the long jump, is making contributions toward the homeless community surrounding her current residence in Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Reese purchased 100 turkeys to be donated to Feed My Sheep and to be given away to listeners of WJZD radio.

Reese donated 35 turkeys to Feed My Sheep, which is a non-judgmental, faith-based program dedicated to providing nourishment to the homeless, homebound and needy in the Gulfport, Miss., area. The Gulf Coast’s primary organization in helping those who have fallen on hard times, Feed My Sheep prides itself on offering assistance to those who walk through their doors with no questions asked. Its 6,000 square foot facility can serve up to 300 hot lunches per day and is capable of preparing an additional 250 meals for distribution to shut-ins.  In 2009, Feed My Sheep served almost 100,000 meals in the dining room and to the homebound in the Gulfport community and they are on track to serve over 135,000 this year.

Reese also donated another 35 turkeys to be given away to listeners of WJZD 94.5 in Gulfport.

Reese took advantage of alternative methods to support the homeless community as the Gulfport feature no homeless shelters.

“I know that everyone needs help in being successful and this is my way of trying to help people who may just need a helping hand,” she said. “This is very important to me as I hope to inspire other people to get out and support their community however they can.”

The generosity from Reese comes at a time when she begins preparation for the 2012 track and field season, which will include the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and the 2012 Olympic Games. She won another gold medal in the long jump at the recent World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea, to go along with gold medals at the World Outdoor Championships in 2009 and the World Indoor Championships in 2010. The World’s top-ranked long jumper, Reese is also a three-time USA Outdoor champion and the 2008 Olympic Trials champion.
