INDIANAPOLIS - The USA Track & Field Board of Directors has voted to pursue new leadership in its CEO position, bringing to a close the tenure of Doug Logan, who had been CEO of the federation since July 2008.

After a meeting over the weekend in Las Vegas, the Board voted to pursue leadership change.

"We sincerely thank Doug for his efforts and his passionate focus on our sport," said USATF President and Chair Stephanie Hightower. "After undertaking an evaluation over the course of the past few months, our Board has decided it is in our best interests to engage different leadership to move the sport forward."

In accordance with USATF bylaws, Chief Operating Officer Mike McNees will assume day-to-day leadership of USATF as the Board begins its search for a new CEO.

"The Board is committed to a thorough, thoughtful CEO search process," Hightower said. "Although our goal is to complete the search process quickly, we will not compromise the quality of the search and candidate evaluation. The Board is fully supportive of the USATF staff, and we know they will do a tremendous job as we enter this new phase for the organization."

Hightower stressed that the USATF Board will continue to vigorously pursue its strategic plan, developed in July 2009 and approved by USATF membership last December. Hightower encouraged individuals with questions about the process or suggestions for the Board to email USATF at [email protected]

LRC: Why Doug Logan Is Out At USATF And Where It Goes From Here LetsRun.com co-founder Weldon Johnson offers his analysis of the Logan dismissal. The outsider likely had zero built-in allies in USATF, which even USATF admits is an organization that is inherently "dysfunctional" in its setup. And when an outsider, not an insider over promises and possibly under delivers he's immediately thrown to the curb as no one's got his back. Regardless, the key thing to focus on is not why he's gone but what type of person does USATF hire to replace him and how do we prevent history from repeating itself as it appears the initial search process was poorly done.

I'm of the opinion that the biggest thing the board needs to look for in their search is this:

1. Someone who can raise money. I see the CEO of USATF position as similar to that of a president of a college. His biggest job is to look good, speak good (okay, speak well...), and get people's checkbooks pulled out.
2. Someone who has a specific vision for growing this sport at the grassroots level. It's all fine and dandy that Americans are running faster than ever, in greater numbers than ever, in the upper echelons of the sport. But, and this goes back to my first point, a sport cannot grow financially if there is no fan base to support it. The model that US Soccer has utilized isn't a bad method of growing a sport from the ground up, rather than top-down.

UPDATE: ``I have my head held high,'' says Logan

By Philip Hersh

It seems as if you can file this the under inmates running the asylum.

This is what ousted chief executive Doug Logan told me by phone after the USA Track & Field board of directors announced Monday it was making what looks like a costly decision to dump him after barely two years on the job:

``Discussions related to the terms of my separation are ongoing, and I can't comment further on them at this point,'' Logan said.

``I have spent 26 months investing my soul in this sport and this federation. Some remarkable transformation has taken place in that time. I am extremely proud of what the staff and I have been able to accomplish.

``I have my head held high. I will pay no attention to anyone who wants to denigrate my record.''
