The Amherst Comet Harriers take the win in Columbus, Ohio in the Fall of 1977. Coach Dick Cooley led the team of Doug Drew, Jim Welte, Jack Malin, Denis Schneider, Mike Sitton, Rich Kapronica and Scott Mudrich to give Amherst Steele its second ever Ohio HS State Title.
Alan Scharsu of Austintown Fitch won the race and Bay Village's Chris Kohler was second, while Drew and Welte were 3rd and 6th for the Comets.
