PHILADELPHIA -- As the plane continued to cut through the heavens on its 22-hour flight from Africa back to the United States, Lopez Lomong gazed out the window.

He was unable to process the beauty of the setting sun as it cast a burnt-orange reflection on thin wisps of clouds outside. Instead, his mind continued to replay the haunting images of his frightened brothers hunkered down as gunfire erupted around their apartment in Kenya, often lasting through the night.

Lomong had gone back to Africa last winter to visit his mother and the two pre-teen brothers, Peter and Alex, he first discovered that he had in 2007. The reunited family celebrated Christmas in Juja and enjoyed their rare time together.

Two days later, chaos gripped the normally-peaceful nation as President Mwai Kibaki's disputed election victory triggered rioting which enveloped pockets of Kenya, from opposition strongholds in the west near the Ugandan border to Nairobi's shantytowns and the port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast.

“My mom saw these types of things happen all the time in Sudan but my brothers were scared because stuff like that didn’t happen in Kenya,” Lomong said in a sit down interview with Universal Sports before the Penn Relays. “After the elections, people started fighting each other and cutting each other with machetes. I took my brothers and my mom into the house and all of us stayed together. We closed the gate and the house at 6 o’clock every day. We made sure we had everything we needed before then so we weren’t going outside. Where we were, people were fighting outside the whole night. Gun shots would go off all the time. I thank God I was there to protect them.”
